Debbie’s Story

DebJosh webThe Time out for Parents course arrived at a perfect time for me.  Life was a rollercoaster blur of activity with a 20-month-old; days filled with highs and lows and little time to think!  I heard about the Time Out for Parents course during a service one Sunday and was really encouraged that the church was offering a course to support parents through the early years.

My husband and I attended the course on Tuesday evenings with another couple who had children of a similar age and were guided through the six-week course by Diana and Helen – two friendly, supportive, calming and encouraging course leaders.  With humility, humour and sensitivity, our leaders actively listened to everything we had to share and took a sincere interest and care in our lives as parents.debbiesquote

Through shared conversation and creative group activities, each session helped us to explore key areas such as children’s temperaments, needs and attachment, the importance of play and listening, parenting styles and boundaries, discipline and safety, and our relationships with our partners and the wider family.  Sharing common experiences over issues and everyday triumphs and challenges with other parents was really reassuring and encouraging, and we were able to go away each week with ideas and tools to help us use positive parenting techniques in a variety of situations.  As well as this, it was a welcome break in our busy schedule – we were well looked after with drink and biscuit breaks both before and during the session.

Time Out for Parents gives parents precious time out to reflect on their lives as parents, and share experiences, joys, achievements and everyday struggles with others in the same boat.  It enables you to see parenting as an ongoing project that you can strive to get better at day by day, supports you to feel more confident in the things you already do well and provides practical tools to work on areas that you are finding difficult with your child.  Our family draws upon the experience of the course on a daily basis and feel that it has enhanced our life as parents, motivating and inspiring us to see each day as fresh opportunity to be the best parents we can be, but not to be hard on ourselves if we aren’t!
