There are many countries where it is very costly to be a Christian. In some it is forbidden to be a Christian at all and being caught engaging in any Christian activity can result in extreme punishment.  Persecution is particularly severe in countries like North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.  Individual Christians are frequently attacked, sometimes killed and their churches bombed or burned.  Many Christian pastors are imprisoned by the authorities, their families shunned by their communities and impoverished through being unable to get work.

Open Doors is an international ministry serving persecuted Christians worldwide (www.opendoorsuk.org).  It supplies Bibles, leadership training, literacy programmes, livelihood support and advocacy services.  It seeks to mobilise the church in the UK & Ireland to serve their brothers and sisters in Christ whose faith is costing them most.  It encourages Christians to pray, to give, to volunteer and to campaign by speaking to the powerful on behalf of the powerless.

Please pray for our Christian brothers and sisters in the following countries:

  • Iraq. Every church in Mosul has been destroyed and Christians are under huge pressure from Islamists to convert to Islam or face death.
  • The largest Christian town in Iraq Quaraqosh has been taken over by IS.
  • Syria. Similar persecution of Christians by IS is widespread.
  • North Korea. It is forbidden by the government to be a Christian in North Korea and many are imprisoned or killed for daring to meet together to pray or read the Bible.

The list goes on…Sudan, Nigeria, Egypt, Bhutan…
