New series : Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

Over the next few months (with a change of theme during Lent) we’ll be spending some time in the Old Testament.

It is generally accepted that when preachers come to plan their sermon series they tend to opt for the New Testament rather than the Old. They feel comfortable preaching from the gospels and the letters and the way all that Jesus came to do speaks to our lives today. The Old Testament, however, is tougher ground to furrow with much that is perplexing - especially the books and passages that seem to be all about land grabs and military conquest.

But the Old Testament was Jesus’ bible.

He studied it, memorised it, quoted from it, and he viewed it as God’s word. And perhaps most importantly, he saw how the Old Testament scriptures spoke of his own coming. He found in them promises and prophesies that both set the scene for the arrival of Jesus the Messiah and helped to shape our understanding of who he is and why he came.

So, in this series ‘Finding Jesus in the Old Testament’, as we look at the lives of some of the well-known characters of the Old Testament we’ll be asking: how do we see the life and ministry of Jesus either patterned, promised or present in this story? How do Noah, Abraham, Moses and many others point to, or foretell in some way, the coming of Jesus. And how do we see the events of their lives shine greater light on all that we read of Jesus’ mission in the gospels?

This series will divide into two parts. From January to Lent we will look at five Old Testament characters. Then during the six weeks of Lent we’ll study the I Ams of Jesus before returning to the Old Testament for the six weeks leading up to Pentecost.
